AI Controlled Ship Makes Successful Voyage With No Human Intervention.
Captainless Ships Are Coming
Orca AI (www.orca-ai.io) successfully completed a 491-mile, 40-hour-long journey with its AI controlled freighter, without human intervention.
And it was not a small boat. It’s a 750-gross-ton vessel. The ship in the image above. There was no Captain at the wheel.
The ship embarked from Tokyo Bay, a very busy harbour , supplying Tokyo’s 35 million residents.
The AI navigation system successfully coped with 107 obstacles on this voyage. The ship had to maneuver itself a number of times to avoid collisions. It did so without human involvement.
The open ocean, obviously, was the easy part of the voyage. Tokyo Bay was the big test. The successful journey gave impetus to the arrival of autonomous shipping.
Pundits predict AI controlled cranes loading and unloading AI controlled ships in the near future. A revolution in international shipping seems to be on the horizon.
