Glad to interact with you by email - rthompson.gdson@gmail.com - My thinking on the Greek and original languages is; I think we can understand what is meant in English. The Scriptures are to important for God to leave us with lack of understanding in our own language. The guy or girl on the street's salvation and growth in Christ is too important for God to leave misunderstandings in the Scriptures in their own language.
Regarding that passage - my research convinced me in the first chapter of 1John he had in mind those who were teaching heresies - eg the gnostics and others, who were a real threat to the truth in those days.- who said we have no sin etc. I think the whole of the first chapter is John establishing the truth of the proper Gospel.
