QUANTUM WEIRDNESS EXPLAINS HITHERTO UNANSWERED QUESTIONS.
LONG STANDING SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS IN NATURE ANSWERED.
Quantum tunneling is one of the strange discoveries of Quantum Mechanics. It has proven to be one of the basic activities in nature and the material realm. Here is a simple explanation of the process; If a group of balls are rolled towards a hill, they will roll a certain distance up then roll back down, with the exception of one of the balls. It disappears and is found on the far side of the hill. Somehow it has tunneled through the hill. That is Quantum tunneling.
It happens in the nucleus of heavier elements. An atom with a nucleus that is too big releases what is called an alpha particle made up of two protons and two neutrons. But the energy barrier of the nucleus the alpha particle must pass through is much greater than the energy of the alpha particle. How does it get out? Quantum tunneling. It’s the disappearing and appearing on the other side sleight of hand again. Another of the inexplicable conundrums of Quantum Mechanics.
The experiment that proved it; Quantum mechanics, however, allows the alpha particle to escape via Quantum tunneling. The Quantum tunneling theory of alpha decay, independently developed by George Gamow and Ronald Wilfred Gurney and Edward Condon in 1928, was hailed as a very striking confirmation of Quantum…
