TOLKIENS CHRISTIAN ALLEGORY

J R R Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic Christian. He was a member of the Oxford writers group ‘the Inklings’. A small group of friends, which included C S Lewis, who met regularly to discuss their writing. Just before he became a Christian, C S Lewis was flabbergasted to discover an Inklings member he had a deep respect for, was a Bible believing Christian. He states the discovery influenced him deeply in his thinking about Christianity. Since none of the other members were professing Christians, it is almost certain that person was Tolkien.

Tolkien was asked a direct Question: did he, like C S Lewis, deliberately write The lord of the Rings as a Christian analogy? He replied at first it was an unconscious thing, then later in the writing deliberate. As a Christian, without reading it, I took The lord of the Rings to be a spooky story not for Christians. One day I felt the Holy Spirit wanted me to read it, and He would show me the Christian content. I was amazed at the amount of Christian allegory, analogy, and metaphor in the story. There is something powerful in reading Christian truth in allegoric form. The book became, and continues to be, a delight to me.
