Medium is a business. A multi million dollar business. I conjecture, like any business, they intend to stay that way. Again like any business they will do what is necessary to remain not only profitable, but earning big.
Although many ideas pop up on Medium as to how a writer can maximize earnings, I do not think anybody really knows these days. The only constant about earning power is community interaction - back and forth of readers on articles.
My opinion is Medium cannot afford to pay a lot of people large amounts of money. It breaks down to simple mathematics. April 2024 Medium had one million two hundred and seventy five thousand paying members. Which, at $52 membership per year equates to $52,014,300. That is per annum.
Medium pays out monthly. Lets say 1000 paying members earn $1000 a month. Equates to $1000,000 a month. If they are paid every month Medium will be paying out $52,000,000 a year. Obviously if 2000 members are paid $1000 a month, that figure doubles to $104, 000,000 — and so on and so on.
